Regular maintenance is essential for a healthy lawn. Keep your lawn looking beautiful with this list of lawn maintenance things-to-do.
From planting to fertilizing to mowing...a regular lawn maintenance schedule is important in order to have a beautiful green carpet to enjoy.
  • Fertilize each season as directed on the package.
After fertilizing, keep children and animals off the grass until it has been watered. For people who have a well, fertilizing is not recommended.
  • Add grass seed to the lawn in Spring and Fall to thicken the grass and discourage weeds from growing.
  • Spread lime to help reduce moss growth.
  • Cut grass when it is dry and not hot.
Try to mow in the evening or when the temperature is cooler.
  • Water regularly during the dry season.
  • Aerate the lawn once a year or as needed.
First, water the lawn so the ground is soft. If your soil has a lot of clay in it and looks matted, you may want to aerate twice a year. If you have sandy soil, only once a year should be enough. Aerating also helps the lawn absorb fertilizer.
  • Level the lawn with a quality top soil a little at a time.
Equal parts sand and compost spread lightly over low areas will keep your lawn level and reduce free-standing patches of water. If the low spot is fairly deep, remove the grass from the low-lying area and spread a thick layer of dirt and grass seed. Water lightly each day for the first couple weeks.
  • Control weeds by mowing regularly
Mowing regularly will reduce the weeds from re-seeding. Keeping the grass cut short allows the sun to reach the entire blade of grass which helps the plant grow.
  • Spread compostable material mixed with top soil if re-seeding or as needed.
If creating your own compost in an above-ground unit, turn compost every couple of weeks and add more dirt to help with composting. Look for and encourage worms.
