Avoid loans of any kind. Avoid government loans in particular as they cannot be removed by declaring bankruptcy (not that you ever should!)
Get grants if you can. Grants are typically provided to you without obligation. The FASFA application for a Federal Pell Grant should be completed as soon as possible after completing your tax return. Also search for other possible grants.
Pay ahead. Get a summer job. Take a year off and save, always with your mind's eye on starting at school. Put it in your calendar when to register if you are taking a year off.
Get a part-time job while in school. This should pay for your living expenses 2 months or more from now so try and have enough saved for this situation.
Live inexpensively. Paying for an education and being able to be rewarded by a commensurate job (one that is only possible with the education) comes after you graduate. Make that possible by living within your means.
Get help from your parents, grandparents, and relatives. There are now websites where you can create a loan agreement with flexible terms that will make them more likely to want to lend money to you.
Work on getting scholarships. Find out what scholarships you might qualify for. Check with counselors, non-profit organizations, local businesses, and scholarship websites for ideas. Work to make sure you can qualify; keep your grades up.
Consider starting at a community college. This is usually less expensive. Credits from a community college can be transfered to get the degree from the institution you need for your occupation
Only take as many classes as you can afford to pay with cash or grant money.
Whenever possible, purchase paperback books from online sources instead of the college bookstore. Check with your professor to see if a previous edition will be acceptable. Online or digital textbooks are also becoming possible and should cost a lot less, though this solution requires a computer and internet connection.
